THE Milton Obote Foundation is renovating Uganda House in preparation for the Commonwealth Summit (CHOGM). The building houses the headquarters of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
However, the party secretary general, Peter Walubiri, yesterday denied knowledge of the renovation.
Sam Odaka, the Obote Foundation chairman, said Kampala City Council had instructed them to renovate the building.
They plan to re-tarmac the parking yard along Nkurumah Road, replace the pavement slabs along Kampala Road, clean and paint the building and refurbish the water and sewerage facilities.
Uganda House was built in 1960 when UPC was in power. The second tower of the building has never been completed.
The party leadership, under Miria Obote, early this year went to court to seek equitable ownership of the Obote Foundation. Sources said renovation would cost about sh350m.
Odaka, however, said: “Ideally we should have totally overhauled the building and put up the second tower but the wrangles between the party and the foundation have derailed us.â€
He said the foundation had incurred sh50m in legal costs over the wrangles. “That is part of the money we should have saved to overhaul the building.â€
