BEBE VS BOBI : who will take the day?

They are both lyrically strong and their battle can only grow. For the third year in a row, “Big Size” Bebe Cool and “ Mazzi Mawanvu” Bobi Wine have held their album launches on the same day, within earshot of each other.

They are both lyrically strong and their battle can only grow. For the third year in a row, “Big Size” Bebe Cool and “ Mazzi Mawanvu” Bobi Wine have held their album launches on the same day, within earshot of each other.

From Agenze Vs. Carolina, Wesootinge Vs. Bogola Ko, Kataala Vs. Kasepiki, and now Minzani Vs. Matyansi Butyampa, Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine have always sought to cancel each other out physically and lyrically.

What beholds tonight? Does Bebe Cool hold a slight advantage over Bobi Wine considering that while Bobi Wine was away on honeymoon meeting the likes of Will Smith, Bebe Cool was busy canvassing for support and vending his tickets?

What does the choice of venue say about the prospects of both artistes?  Who will attract which crowd on the strengths of the songs?

Was Bebe’s move to launch at the rooftop of Garden City meant to make him catch a competitive peep at his musical enemy Bobi Wine, whose launch will be at Hotel Africana, just a stone’s throw from Garden City? Maybe.

But Bebe, who says he has since taken to singing societal conscious songs rather than veiled attacks at musical enemies, claims he chose the venue just for the sake of a cool and classy venue for his level-headed fans.
He has billed it as more of a listener’s party where he will do his thing with a live band, with complimentary drinks. Plus, tickets to either’s launch are priced at sh20,000 and sh50,000, for ordinary and VIP seating.

This immediately spells competition all over the scene. Bebe has his advantages, especially since he has been around promoting his concert, while Bobi just landed on Tuesday from a month’s honeymoon in Canada and the US with his wife Barbie.  Whether this gives Bebe an advantage over Bobi, it remains to be seen.

But Bobi also has his advantages. When he walked down the aisle a month ago in a wedding-of-the-season do, he generated a media frenzy.

But then he flew away before anyone got enough of him. Expect several star-struck female fans at his Matyansi Butyampa launch. And he has promised them cake from his wedding.  We asked whether his plan to launch on the same day with Bebe was a competition thing and he denied.

“Competing? What for? There has never been any competition. I am my biggest competition.  As a ‘president’, I have many followers. I expect them to turn up in droves.

From the ghetto youths and ghetto ministers, to cabinet and Buganda kingdom ministers, expect a full house,” he said.

Both have had a good year in music. Let us wait and see who will attract a bigger crowd.
