Tourney in doubt over World Cup NETBALL - NIC has called off their training in preparations for the five nations club tournament after hosts South Africa put the event on hold due to security reasons pertaining to the upcoming World Cup. The decision was communicated by the South Africa netball governing body. NIC manager Joseline Uchanda said they called off training until further notice.
Renard wants Taifa Stars job SOCCER - Zambia national soccer team’s coach Herve Renard has expressed interest to replace Brazilian Marcio Maximo as Taifa Stars tactician. Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) general secretary Fredrick Mwakalebela confirmed that Renard was among high profile coaches who sent their applications. Maximo is soon leaving and TFF is in the process of searching for a successor. Mwakalebela said coaches from all over the world have applied.
UPBC forces boxer to quit SOCCER - Uganda Professional Boxing Commission has forced middleweight Meddie Serunjogi to hang up his gloves because, according to the commission, he is no longer fit to fight. The move comes after several incidences that have marred professional boxing, one of which resulted in boxer Mohammed Basule losing his life in Nairobi in 2004.
Chairman’s shield flops HOCKEY - The inaugural hockey Chairman’s Shield that was due Saturday at Lugogo has been extended until February 13 at the same venue. The event that has attracted two clubs in the men’s section and a similar number in the women’s failed due to the low turn up by clubs whose majority of players are university students.
25 complete Sironko course SOCCER - Twenty-five referees, six of them women, have completed a one-week beginners referee training course at Sironko play ground conducted by FUFA referee Ali Waisswa. Waisswa said that Sironko district has always had poor standards of referees in the region so he saw it necessary for him to come and conduct such a course. Zone two chairman Sam Lwere urged more women to take part in the development of football.
15 schools enter tourney BASKETBALL - Fifteen schools have confirmed their participation in this year’s National Schools Basketball Association (NASBA) All-Stars competition that will be hosted by St. Michael High school Sonde on February 27-28. NASBA secretary Kigozi Kafumbe said teams from Wakiso, Kampala, Luwero and Mpigi districts dominate the entries. “We have received confirmation from 15 school teams but are dominated from districts near Kampala,” Kigozi said.
