A 35-year-old local council chairperson in Soroti town was among pupils who yesterday completed writing their Primary Leaving Examinations.
Sulaiman Ghanim, the LC1 chairperson for Central Cell, sat his leavers' exams at Pioneer Primary School.
Head teacher Edward Osidak said Ghanim, popularly referred to as Anim, was disciplined.
“He was always the first to arrive at school and would ask for extra lessons from the teachers,” said Osidak. Ghanim was good in English and Mathematics and he hardly missed lessons. He said Ghanim was “very active in class” and would pass since “his performance has been average”.
Asked to comment on the examinations, Ghanim, the father of two, said: “The exams have been very difficult, but I believe I will pass.”
Ghanim wants to become the mayor of Soroti and an MP so as to take over the management of the municipality. “People have messed up this municipality. It is high time I got better papers to steer this municipality into the right direction.”
He said he could not achieve his dream unless he has adequate papers. Under the rules, Ghanim has another six years to stay in school before he attains the mandatory A’level certificate he needs in order to stand for a Member of Parliament.
Commenting on the conduct of the examination across the district, school inspector Sam Oyata said all went well.
However, in Kampala, heavy rains in the morning caused flooding and disrupted examinations in some primary schools. In Bwaise, at St. James Primary School, about 60 pupils were transferred to the nearby Bilal Islamic primary school after the road to their school became impassable.
Despite the inconveniences, invigilators said the examination, which began on Monday, went smoothly for the 516,890 candidates who sat this year.
Masindi district education officer Margaret Ekwang added that Fiona Bbaale, the student who delivered during the examination on Monday, sat her final mathematics paper yesterday.
